A new ro-ro barge service has been started on the Dutch canal network between Rotterdam, Tiel and Hoorn. The service is being operated on a trial basis, with the backing of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, which is anxious to reduce road congestion in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Den Haag conurbation.
It is organised by DHV, the engineering bureau. The barge has a capacity for 32 unaccompanied trailers, with local pick-up and delivery at each destination. Tka-up has reportedly been very good, indicating that the principle is supported by large-scale hauliers and logistic firms, with the organisation necessary for unaccompanied traffic.
The service is operated by Rhine Ro-Ro Service, in cooperation with Tielse Loswal Combinatie, Westfries Containerterminal, Ooms Avenhorn and MEO.
